Haksar recreates the India of early 20th century and deftly captures its flavour and charm, its first stirrings under Gandhi and Nehru. His book is a moving evocation of the life he led in small towns of central India, keeping company with the poor and the humble, with insight into the special family occasions he savoured now and then in various parts of the subcontinent. P. N. Haksar, born in 1913, has been called the most distinguished public servant of his generation. After a spell as a barrister at the Allahabad high court (1943-8), he was drawn into the foreign service. ubsequently, he directed the course of government policies at home and abroad as Secretary and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, Mrs Indira Gandhi (1967-73). Later, as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and Vice Chairman of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, he was executive head of the country's planning and R \u0026amp; D structures (1974-7).
