Book Summary
Q & A is the debut novel of Vikas Swarup, published in 2005. The book gained widespread recognition after it was adapted into the critically acclaimed film Slumdog Millionaire in 2008. The novel is a compelling and thought-provoking narrative that weaves together elements of social realism, drama, and a rags-to-riches storyline.
The story follows Ram Mohammad Thomas, a poor young man from the slums of India who wins a fortune by correctly answering all the questions on the Indian version of the television quiz show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" However, instead of being celebrated, Ram is arrested on charges of cheating, as the authorities cannot believe that someone from his background could have answered the questions correctly. As he is interrogated, Ram tells his story to the police, recounting his life experiences and explaining how he knew the answers to each question.
The book is structured around 12 questions, each corresponding to a significant event in Ram’s life. Through these questions, the reader learns about Ram’s past, including his experiences with corruption, love, betrayal, and survival. His journey takes him through a series of unfortunate and sometimes bizarre circumstances, but despite the hardships, Ram demonstrates resilience and wisdom beyond his years.
As Ram recounts his life, the novel explores the complexities of modern-day India—its social stratification, poverty, injustice, and the resilience of the human spirit. Each chapter unveils a new layer of Ram's character and his struggle to survive in an unjust and chaotic world. The narrative is filled with vivid descriptions, humor, and a critique of the socio-political system in India.
