Book Summary
The Birth of Britain, first published in 1956, is the first volume in Winston Churchill’s ambitious four-part series A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. This volume covers the early history of Britain — from prehistoric times through to the end of the 15th century, concluding with the rise of the Tudor dynasty after the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485).
Churchill narrates the story of Britain's formation with a blend of historical fact and statesmanlike interpretation. Major periods and events include:
-
The Roman conquest and occupation of Britain
-
The Anglo-Saxon invasions and the formation of early English kingdoms
-
The Viking invasions and resistance led by King Alfred the Great
-
The Norman Conquest (1066) and its transformational impact on England
-
The Plantagenet dynasty, including the reigns of Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, and King John (and the signing of the Magna Carta)
-
The Hundred Years' War and England's early struggles with France
-
The Wars of the Roses, leading to the rise of Henry VII and the dawn of Tudor rule
Churchill brings characters such as William the Conqueror, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Joan of Arc to life, emphasizing the narrative of power, identity, and the emergence of English political institutions.
About the Author

In 1953, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his historical and biographical writings, including this series.
Churchill wrote this work largely during his time out of office (between 1939 and 1956), drawing on his broad knowledge of British history and his belief in the shared destiny of English-speaking nations.
