Book Summary
Michael Ondaatje’s debut novel, originally published in 1976, offers a haunting, lyrical fictionalization of the last days of Buddy Bolden, the legendary—but largely undocumented—New Orleans cornet pioneer often credited as a father of Dixieland jazz Set in early 1900s Storyville, the narrative is sculpted in fragments, riffs, and syncopated rhythms akin to jazz itself: scenes leap unpredictably between characters and voices, conveying Bolden’s descent into mental fragmentation as creativity and madness entwine.
Told through shifting perspectives—including Bolden himself, his detective friend Webb, and the photographer E. J. Bellocq—the novel is part ghost story, part investigative drama. Webb’s quest to locate Bolden after his abrupt disappearance illuminates both the musician’s exhilarating nights and inner turmoil. Bolden's triumphant performance at a parade becomes the tragic catalyst for his breakdown and confinement in an asylum, after which his life—and music—cease. Critically acclaimed as “perhaps the finest jazz novel ever written,” the book’s form and tone mirror both the music and madness of its subject
