Book Summary

Crime and Punishment is a psychological novel that delves deeply into guilt, morality, and the consequences of transgressing moral law. It follows Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, a former law student living in extreme poverty in St. Petersburg. Raskolnikov believes himself intellectually superior and theorizes that “extraordinary” people have the right to break moral laws if it leads to a greater good. To prove his theory, he murders an old pawnbroker woman, rationalizing that her death will benefit others.

However, after the crime, Raskolnikov is consumed by guilt, paranoia, and moral conflict. His mental state deteriorates as he vacillates between justifying the murder and being tormented by remorse. He becomes entangled with other characters who represent moral opposites: Sonia, a humble and compassionate prostitute whose faith and suffering influence him; Porfiry Petrovich, the astute investigator who suspects him and engages him psychologically; and Dounia and Razumikhin, his loyal sister and friend who embody decency and support.

The novel explores themes such as the nature of good and evil, redemption through suffering, social injustice, alienation, and the moral complexity of human choice. Dostoevsky doesn’t merely chronicle a crime—he dissects the soul of a man who attempts to justify evil and the psychological consequences that follow. The story ultimately moves toward confession, spiritual awakening, and the possibility of redemption.

About the Author —

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821–1881) was a Russian novelist, short-story writer, essayist, and philosopher widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in world literature. His works explore human psychology in the turbulent social, political, and spiritual landscapes of 19th-century Russia. Dostoevsky’s own life was marked by hardship, including imprisonment, a mock death sentence, exile in Siberia, gambling addiction, and deep religious reflection—experiences that profoundly influenced his writing. His major novels, such as Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov, blend intense psychological insight with ethical, existential, and theological questions. Dostoevsky’s exploration of suffering, free will, and moral responsibility continues to resonate with readers and scholars around the world.
