Book Summary

Crime and Punishment is a psychological novel that delves deeply into guilt, morality, and the consequences of transgressing moral law. It follows Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, a former law student living in extreme poverty in St. Petersburg. Raskolnikov believes himself intellectually superior and theorizes that “extraordinary” people have the right to break moral laws if it leads to a greater good. To prove his theory, he murders an old pawnbroker woman, rationalizing that her death will benefit others.

However, after the crime, Raskolnikov is consumed by guilt, paranoia, and moral conflict. His mental state deteriorates as he vacillates between justifying the murder and being tormented by remorse. The novel explores themes such as the nature of good and evil, redemption through suffering, social injustice, alienation, and the moral complexity of human choice.
