Book Summary

Gone Tomorrow is the 13th novel in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series. The story begins with Reacher riding the New York City subway alone at about 2 AM. He notices a woman who seems suspicious (she meets many of the profile traits of a potential suicide bomber). When Reacher approaches her to offer assistance, she suddenly takes out a gun and kills herself.

That event disturbs Reacher. Feeling some responsibility (or at least a strong curiosity), he refuses to let go of what seems to be a closed case. He suspects there’s more behind the woman's suicide: Who was she, where was she really from, what drove her to jump—and what secrets might have followed her onto that subway car? As Reacher digs deeper, he gets resistance from various parties: NYPD, FBI, even anonymous threats, suggesting someone powerful wants the matter dropped. The trail leads him into a shadowy world involving government secrets, terrorism fears, political scandals, and corrupt ambitions.

The tension builds with Reacher’s typical mix of physical threat, guessing who to trust, and using both brains and brawn to untangle the mystery. The climax resolves the immediate threat but leaves lingering questions about what systems let people fall through cracks, what power does with secrets, and how one man’s moral resolve can matter in a world full of apathy or fear.

About the Author: 

Lee Child is the pen‑name of James Dover Grant (born October 29, 1954, in Coventry, England). He spent many years working in television (for Granada Television) before a corporate restructuring led him to write novels. His breakthrough came with Killing Floor (the first Jack Reacher novel), which established his style: lean, fast‑paced narratives, a strong, itinerant solitary hero, and a mix of action, moral ambiguity, and suspense.  Over time Lee Child has become one of the most successful thriller writers globally, with the Jack Reacher series selling millions of copies and adapted into film and TV. He currently lives in New York (though born and raised in the UK) and has received many awards and honors for his contribution to crime and thriller literature.
