Book Summary
The novel traces the deep, complicated relationship between Anshuman “Anshu” Kale and Indira “Indu” Kelkar, who begin as children and grow into young adults believing their friendship is unbreakable. Their bond is formed through small, everyday events — a lost school bag, a missed school bus, some shared after‑school cutlets — and as they grow up, they think nothing can come between them. But teenage years bring change: Indira falls in love with an older guy (five years her senior), which introduces cracks in her and Anshuman’s friendship. She becomes emotionally caught between love and friendship, unable to let go of either. Years later, they are estranged. Anshuman has moved to Australia, built a life, and is about to marry another woman (Alisha), while Indira is going through something much more serious — she has filed an euthanasia appeal.
When Anshuman learns about Indira’s situation, he returns to India, compelled by the gravity of their past and his care for her. This reunion sets up the emotional climax: will Anshuman be able to help Indira? Can their friendship survive the years and the choices they’ve made? What about his engagement to Alisha? The novel moves back and forth between past and present, peeling layers of their history, regrets, guilt, love, and loyalty.
