About the Author

Hugh Walter Kelsey (1926–1995) was a celebrated British (Scottish) bridge player and prolific writer, revered for his deep contributions to advanced bridge literature. He won the prestigious Gold Cup twice (1969 and 1980), represented Scotland in the Camrose Trophy twelve times, and captained Great Britain’s women's team in the 1984 World Team Olympiad.

Kelsey authored around fifty influential bridge books—many still in print well after his passing. Among these, Killing Defence at Bridge and Advanced Play at Bridge are deemed essential in any advanced bridge library. His collaboration Adventures in Card Play introduced groundbreaking concepts like backwash and entry-shifting squeezes and remains one of the most advanced works in the field. Beyond writing, Kelsey was the bridge columnist for The Scotsman, general editor of the Gollancz Master Bridge series, and was honored as the International Bridge Press Association’s Personality of the Year in 1993—testament to his enduring influence in the bridge community
