Book Summary
The Age of Shakespeare is Volume 2 in The New Pelican Guide to English Literature, first published in 1955. Edited by Boris Ford, this expansive volume—spanning roughly 480 pages—offers both a sweeping overview of the English literary Renaissance and a detailed focus on the era’s key figures. It begins with a general survey of the period’s social, cultural, and literary context, then moves into individual essays on dramatists, poets, and prose writers of the time. Notably, five essays are devoted exclusively to Shakespeare’s plays, analyzing his major tragedies, comedies, and histories. The volume also includes an appendix with short biographies of authors, recommended critical editions of their works, and annotated bibliographies for further reading.
This volume’s format makes it both scholarly and accessible: it situates Shakespeare within broader Renaissance culture, yet provides in‑depth critiques of his contemporaries and his own works. It’s a valuable resource for students and general readers alike looking for authoritative yet readable literary criticism and historical context.
About the Editor:
Richard Boris Ford (1 July 1917 – 19 May 1998) was a distinguished British literary critic, editor, writer, and educationist. Born in Simla during the British Raj, he studied at Cambridge, where he was mentored by F. R. Leavis. Ford’s career spanned roles such as chief editor of the Army Bureau of Current Affairs, education secretary at Cambridge University Press, and professor and dean in education at the Universities of Sheffield, Sussex, and Bristol
He edited The Pelican Guide to English Literature (seven volumes, 1954–61), with The Age of Shakespeare being Volume 2, and later oversaw The Cambridge Guide to the Arts in Britain, a nine‑volume cultural history of Britain published between 1988 and 1991 . Known for combining scholarly rigor with accessibility, Ford’s editorial work remains a foundational resource for literary education and criticism.
