About The Author:

Jill Tomlinson (1931–1976) never set out to write children’s books—instead she trained as an opera singer and later pursued a journalism course. It was in her very first lesson that she realized she wanted to write for children, launching a career that would produce beloved animal tales such as The Hen Who Wouldn’t Give Up, The Cat Who Wanted to Go Home, The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark and others.When The Hen Who Wouldn’t Give Up was being developed, her publisher encouraged her to add five more stories to her original five, forming the complete Read‑Aloud collection that became the published book.Soon after, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which made writing physically painful and forced her family to carry out much of the research, yet her warmth, humour and vivid empathy always shine through her work.Jill continued reading her stories aloud in schools and to friends’ children, even once she was wheelchair-bound, until her untimely death from complications at age 45.
