The book was compiled by Dahl in an attempt to showcase some of his own life to his readers. It was first published in the United Kingdom in 1997 by Puffin Books. The book is an anthology of Dahl's stories.

The book has been divided into four parts. Each part takes on a different theme. The four parts are Animals; Magic; Family, Friends and Foes; and Matters of Importance. The book introduces us to some of Dahl's most endearing characters like Willy Wonka from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Charlie and The Great Glass Elevator, The Big Friendly Giant or The BFG, Matilda, James, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Witches, The Twits and more. In each, you will find the complete stories, poems and other unpublished works of Roald Dahl.

The book has many illustrations and pictures specially made for this book by the renowned illustrator and cartoonist Quentin Blake. The book also has many old illustrations in color. The book also contains many wonderful illustrations by guest illustrators like Raymond Briggs and Ralph Steadman. These illustrations add a great variety to the book. Along with these, The Roald Dahl Treasury includes many unpublished letters exchanged by Dahl with his family.
