Book Summary
The Setting Sun (Shayō) is a poignant novel set in post-World War II Japan that explores social collapse, personal despair, and the search for identity in a rapidly changing world. The story is told through the eyes of Kazuko, a 29-year-old woman born into a once-aristocratic family whose fortunes have crumbled after Japan’s defeat. Facing poverty, the decline of traditional values, and the illness of her widowed mother, Kazuko tries to adapt to a harsher reality. Her brother Naoji, once educated and idealistic, returns from the war addicted to drugs and disillusioned, representing the spiritual collapse of the younger generation. Kazuko falls into a troubled relationship with a cynical writer and grapples with moral and emotional uncertainty as she watches her family disintegrate. In the end, she embraces a fragile hope for renewal—symbolized by her pregnancy—despite the enormous personal and societal upheaval around her. The novel vividly captures the decline of the aristocracy, the psychological impact of war, and the struggle for meaning in a transformed society.
About the Author —
Osamu Dazai (1909–1948) was one of Japan’s most influential 20th-century novelists, whose work became a defining voice of post-war Japanese literature. Born Tsushima Shūji in northern Japan, Dazai drew deeply on his own troubled life—marked by emotional turmoil, addiction, and repeated suicide attempts—to create semi-autobiographical fiction that blends bleak introspection with lyrical prose. His novels The Setting Sun and No Longer Human are especially celebrated for their raw honesty and their exploration of alienation, identity, and despair in modern society. Dazai’s work remains widely read and studied, admired for its psychological depth and enduring literary impact.
