About the Author —
Eric Carle was a world-renowned author and illustrator of children’s picture books whose bright, collage-style artwork and imaginative storytelling delighted generations of young readers. Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929 and raised partly in Germany, Carle studied art before returning to the United States to work as a graphic designer. He published more than seventy books, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has sold tens of millions of copies worldwide and been translated into dozens of languages. Carle’s work often features themes of nature and transformation, reflecting his lifelong love of the natural world. In 2002 he and his wife co-founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts. He passed away in 2021, but his joyful books continue to inspire curiosity and creativity in young readers everywhere.
